"I want readers to feel hope, but I also recommend that once or twice in life, they step out through their own window. It’s not easy for everyone struggling with everyday life. So why not step out through a window while reading a novel? If someone said my book felt like 11 hours of therapy, I would be proud."
— Jonas Jonasson in an interview with Daily News.
After completing his language studies in Gothenburg, Jonasson began working as a journalist for Smålandsposten, and later for the national newspaper Expressen. He eventually started his own business, but after 20 years in the media industry, he gave it up to become a full-time writer. Seeking an escape from his previous life, he found a place of retreat in Ticino, by Lake Lugano, near the Italian border. It was there, in 2009, that he wrote his debut novel, which became a huge success.
"Hundraåringen som klev ut genom fönstret och försvann" (The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared) was Jonasson's first novel, and readers loved it instantly. In 2010 and 2011, it was the best-selling book in Sweden. It also won the Bokhandlarpriset and Iris Ljudbokspris for Best Audiobook in 2010. In 2012, Jonasson was awarded the M-Pionier Literary Prize by the German bookstore Mayersche. The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared sold millions of copies and was translated into numerous languages. In 2013, it was adapted into a film.
In the following years, Jonasson wrote other books, including:
- Analfabeten som kunde räkna (The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden, 2013)
- Mördar-Anders och hans vänner (samt en och annan ovän) (Hitman Anders and the Meaning of It All, 2015)
- Hundraettåringen som tänkte att han tänkte för mycket (The Accidental Further Adventures of the Hundred-Year-Old Man, 2018)
- Profeten och idioten (The Prophet and the Idiot, 2023)
Like his debut, Analfabeten som kunde räkna and Mördar-Anders och hans vänner (samt en och annan ovän) became bestsellers and were widely enjoyed by readers.
Jonasson is known for his humorous and sometimes absurd narrative style. His stories often feature eccentric and colorful characters—either ordinary people who find themselves in extraordinary situations or extraordinary people facing bizarre challenges. He skillfully weaves tales full of unexpected twists that surprise readers.
Many of his books are set against historical backdrops and often include satirical elements that comment on contemporary social issues. His novels are known for being lighthearted and entertaining while remaining easy to read despite sometimes complex plot developments.
In an interview with The Guardian, when asked whether he thinks there is a lack of literature that makes readers laugh, Jonasson responded:
"Yes. To me, it’s strange that high-quality literature shouldn’t be funny or uplifting. I see no conflict. If we didn’t look at humanity with a bit of humor, I don’t think we could survive."
In another interview, he expressed his hope for his readers:
"I want them to read, smile—and take a moment to rethink things. Then, maybe, they can change the world just a little."
