SWEDISH CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE
Swedish contemporary literature has a long tradition. It is considered part of Scandinavian literature, as Sweden belongs to the Scandinavian countries.
A BIT OF HISTORY
As early as the Middle Ages, we can observe distinct markers characteristic of literature and texts emerging in the Nordic countries, including Sweden. Scandinavian mythology was highly regarded and widely appreciated, and over time, as Christian culture gained popularity, religious themes became more prominent. Initially, texts were written in runes, later in Latin—similar to many European countries of that period. Despite the dominance of oral tradition in the Middle Ages, the first written texts emerged, offering us invaluable knowledge about Swedish life centuries ago.
With time, during the Renaissance, writers began to embrace national languages, allowing for fuller artistic expression and the creation of works that better reflected contemporary reality. A recurring theme in Swedish contemporary literature is the great migration of Swedes between the 19th and 20th centuries when millions of Swedes moved abroad, primarily to the United States, in search of a better life.
MODERN SWEDISH CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE
Contemporary authors focus on portraying reality, often in a humorous way, like Fredrik Backman or Jonas Jonasson. Their books quickly became international bestsellers. Some notable titles include:
-
The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared (Hundraåringen som klev ut genom fönstret och försvann)
-
A Man Called Ove (En man som heter Ove)
-
Britt-Marie Was Here (Britt-Marie var här)
SWEDISH-FINNISH LITERATURE
When discussing Swedish-language literature, we must not forget Swedish-Finnish literature, which refers to works created by authors living in Finland but writing in Swedish.
Currently, there are three distinct regions where Swedish is spoken as a minority language. The largest number of Swedish-speaking Finns live on the southern coast (Uusimaa), followed by Ostrobothnia and the Åland Islands. The highest absolute numbers of Swedish speakers reside in Helsinki, Espoo, and Porvoo. Among them, several acclaimed writers stand out, such as Tove Jansson, Kjell Westö, and Ann-Luise Bertell. Their works are readily available in our bookstore.

Contemporary literature primarily tells stories about people’s daily lives. As readers, we follow their highs and lows, their successes and failures, their love affairs and heartbreaks. Such stories engage readers because they can identify with the characters, and the events depicted may resonate with their own experiences. This explains why this genre enjoys such immense popularity and why authors continue to release new books regularly. Of course, the classics of Swedish-language literature should not be overlooked. It’s also worth exploring modern authors who skillfully wield their pens and masterfully use the Swedish language.
WHAT SWEDISH CONTEMPORARY BOOKS CAN YOU FIND IN OUR STORE?
Modern Swedish literature also includes fiction, a category mainly encompassing books about everyday life. These stories often feature not only women’s issues but also love themes and intriguing character arcs. Authors frequently focus on real-life facts, avoiding supernatural elements, so fans of fantasy might find contemporary literature somewhat lacking in excitement. However, social and contemporary novels are particularly noteworthy, as they emphasize descriptions of places and customs, immersing readers in the setting. If you're interested in the Scandinavian atmosphere, Swedish literature available in our store is the perfect choice for you.

DISCOVER GREAT SWEDISH AUTHORS IN OUR STORE
In our bookstore, you’ll find many outstanding authors, including Fredrik Backman, a Swedish journalist, writer, and blogger. His literary debut, A Man Called Ove, became a bestseller. Interestingly, the main character, Ove, first appeared on Backman’s blog, where an online vote decided that he would be the protagonist of his debut novel. Critics have praised Backman’s works, so naturally, his books are available in our online store.
Another must-read author is Jonas Jonasson, who wrote the bestseller The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared, which sold over a million copies in Scandinavia alone. The novel follows the life journey of a Swedish Forrest Gump, making it a fascinating read about a man who dined with Truman, flew on a plane with Churchill, and even met Stalin.
For those interested in literary fiction, Hjalmar Söderberg’s classic Den allvarsamma leken is a must-read. Written in exquisite language, it is considered one of the greatest Scandinavian love novels, set in Stockholm. Interestingly, the city itself is not just a backdrop but serves as a central character in the story. The book has been translated into twelve languages, but it is best enjoyed in its original form.
Another remarkable novel is Juloratoriet, which received the Nordic Council Literature Prize. This prestigious award is granted annually by Nordic governments to promote interest in both literature and Nordic languages. The book follows the lives of three generations of a Swedish family and has been translated into twenty languages, as well as adapted into a film.
WHY READ CONTEMPORARY BOOKS IN SWEDISH?
If you are learning Swedish, reading books in their original language is a completely different experience. Translations do not always capture an author's unique style or literary techniques, which can only be fully appreciated in the original Swedish text. Additionally, it makes for a perfect gift for anyone learning the language and wanting to immerse themselves in Scandinavian literature.
Our store also offers books in simplified Swedish (lättläst), making them ideal for language learners. Each book description includes information about the language proficiency level required. Our selection also features Swedish children's literature, Swedish books for doctors, biographies of Swedes, and Swedish crime novels.
