JENS LAPIDUS - BIOGRAFY
Jens Lapidus is a Swedish lawyer and author known for his books about crime in Stockholm.
He was born on May 24, 1974, in Hägersten, Stockholm. His mother was a social worker, and his father was a journalist. He grew up in the Gröndal district, attended Frans Schartau’s Gymnasium in Stockholm, and later studied law at Stockholm University and in London. After completing his judicial clerkship at the Sollentuna District Court, he worked as a business lawyer at Mannheimer Swartling and later joined the criminal defense firm Försvarsadvokaterna. Despite his literary success, he continued working as a lawyer until 2017, when he decided to focus entirely on writing. He was also a co-host of the TV program Efterlyst, which seeks public help in solving criminal cases. Lapidus has been an advocate for reducing long periods of pre-trial detention combined with restrictions on communication.
Lapidus made his literary debut in 2006 with Snabba Cash, a thriller that quickly became one of the best-selling books in Sweden. By early 2010, over 600,000 copies had been sold in both hardcover and paperback. Combining a style inspired by American authors, influences from Swedish rap, and courtroom observations, he created the distinctive Stockholm noir genre. A decade later, he released a special edition titled Snabba Cash XL, which included commentary and essays by other authors.
The next books in the Stockholm noir series include Aldrig fucka upp (2008), the second part of Snabba Cash, and the third installment, Livet deluxe (2011), as well as the graphic novel Gängkrig 145, created in collaboration with illustrator Peter Bergting. In 2014, he started a new trilogy with VIP-rummet, followed by STHLM DELETE and Top Dogg, which concluded the series in 2017.
As a children's book author, Lapidus debuted in 2020 with the Dillstaligan series, co-written with his wife, Hedda Lapidus. The books follow a group of children who engage in various morally questionable adventures.
Jens Lapidus’s books have been translated into 30 languages, and several of his works are available in an easy-to-read (lättläst) format.
Lapidus is also known for his media presence—since 2020, he has hosted the documentary series Lex Lapidus, which explores judicial systems, and since 2021, he has been a legal commentator on TV4’s Efter fem. He has also been recognized as a style icon, winning the title of "Best Dressed Man" in 2008 by King magazine.
Many of his books have been adapted into films and TV series, including Snabba Cash, which was turned into a film in 2010 and later adapted into a Netflix series in 2021.
Jens Lapidus is often cited as one of Sweden’s most prominent thriller and crime fiction writers, alongside authors such as Stieg Larsson. His realistic and high-tension portrayal of Sweden’s criminal underworld, along with his signature Stockholm noir style, has earned him recognition both domestically and internationally, making his books some of the best in the Scandinavian crime fiction genre.
