Description
“Ondskan” by Jan Guillou — in the original Swedish!
“Ondskan” (“The Evil”) is a book that one approaches with some hesitation, as it promises a lot of violence. However, once I started reading it, I quickly became absorbed and found it hard to put down. The novel addresses topics such as school violence, love, friendship, and domestic abuse in a deeply moving way. Very soon, we take Erik’s side and wish for everything to turn out well for him. “Ondskan” is a modern Swedish classic that is definitely worth reading!
— Hedda Ekström Lundborg
In Jan Guillou’s Ondskan, violence is depicted as a part of everyday Swedish life. We follow the story of the protagonist, Erik, who grows up in a world of evil — starting from his family home with a sadistic father, and extending to a schoolyard ruled by gangs. Erik is expelled from his school due to his violent behaviour and is sent to a boarding school. This new environment is full of violence and humiliation, and Erik must find ways to resist. However, his attempts to stand up to the older boys lead to a spiral of violence and revenge that eventually spirals out of his control. The conflict turns into an open war, and Erik ultimately prepares to carry out his final act of revenge...
Partly autobiographical, Jan Guillou’s novel is an attempt to understand the nature of evil and its causes. It is a brilliantly written and highly relevant book that keeps you reading with bated breath.
The French edition of Ondskan was awarded the Best Translated Novel prize by French radio in 1990. The book was also adapted into a film, starring Andreas Wilson in the lead role.
