Description

“Låt den rätte komma in” – a beautiful and terrifying Swedish horror!

Of course, there are no vampires in Blackeberg. Only ordinary people, struggling with their everyday lives. Or are there…?

It is the winter of 1981 in a suburb northwest of Stockholm. People hurry on and off the subway, teenagers sniff glue in basement storage rooms, and the usual group of drunks hangs around the local Chinese restaurant. Meanwhile, the media is filled with sensational reports about a Russian submarine that has run aground in Karlskrona.

In one of the apartment blocks, twelve-year-old Oskar devours horror stories. He dreams of becoming an avenger and finally escaping the humiliations inflicted on him by school bullies. Then, a boy is brutally murdered in nearby Vällingby. At the very same time, Oskar fantasizes about killing his tormentor Jonny—and for a moment, he feels he might have the power to make extraordinary things happen.

Life in Blackeberg is about to change. The residents will be drawn into a dark and menacing vortex. But for Oskar, something else matters even more: his first love. A new neighbor, a girl named Eli, seems unlike anyone he has ever met. Yet there is something unsettling about her…

John Ajvide Lindqvist’s debut novel Let the Right One In (Låt den rätte komma in) is a rarity: a Swedish horror story. Moving, surprising, and truly frightening, it is also a poignant portrait of a lonely, bullied boy searching for a way out of childhood and struggling with the choices ahead of him.

In 2008, the novel was adapted into a Swedish film of the same title, directed by Tomas Alfredson. The screenplay was written by Lindqvist himself, which allowed the film to faithfully capture the atmosphere and themes of the original—a blend of horror, drama, and a touching story about friendship and growing up. The movie received international acclaim and quickly gained cult status.

A few years later, in 2010, an American remake titled Let Me In was released.
