This was when Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö, a Swedish couple, wrote ten novels about Inspector Martin Beck. Their books gained international success, particularly in Germany and the United States, paving the way for future generations of Swedish crime writers.

In recent years, a new trend has emerged in Swedish crime fiction: fictionalized versions of real events.

One of the most famous examples is the assassination of Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme, which has inspired countless books that offer different interpretations of the event. Similarly, the novel Knutby is based on a real-life crime—murders committed within a Pentecostal congregation—but the author adds a unique perspective to the case.
