Medicinska ord och patientspråk is an exercise book for foreign healthcare professionals who want to develop their Swedish medical terminology and communicate more effectively with patients.
The book covers around 1,200 words and expressions, including specialist terms together with their Swedish equivalents, groups of related words used in different contexts, and vocabulary that appears in conversations with patients, patient information texts and medical documentation. The publication helps learners distinguish between the professional language used by healthcare staff and the more everyday expressions used by patients, making it easier to choose the right words for a specific clinical situation.
All exercises include an answer key, making the book suitable both for independent study and for use with a teacher.
Scientific and medical terminology is international, which makes it considerably easier for foreign healthcare professionals to establish themselves in Sweden. But there is another kind of medical language that is equally important to master - general medical language, meaning the language doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals use in direct contact with patients.
Medicinska ord... is an exercise book divided into three main chapters. The first chapter focuses on Swedish medical terminology. The second practises groups of related words, such as känsel, känsla, känning, which are used in different contexts. The third chapter practises words and expressions that appear in spoken dialogue between patients and healthcare staff, in patient-adapted texts and in medical documentation.
