What seems like a minor incident makes him look at his everyday life differently. He decides to distance himself from his former existence, leaves home and moves into a tent in the forest outside Oslo.
Before long, his companion is a young moose named Bongo, orphaned after Doppler kills its mother for food. The increasingly absurd events become the starting point for a story about a man trying to free himself from social expectations, consumerism and a life governed by endless obligations.
Erlend Loe combines his characteristic humour and absurdity with reflections on contemporary society, family, success and the desire to withdraw from everyday life. Doppler is both an entertaining story and a subversive critique of a world in which owning things and constantly achieving new goals can become more important than simply living.
