Chemist Leo Kall develops a truth serum that forces citizens to reveal their most deeply hidden thoughts and dreams. It becomes yet another instrument of oppression in the hands of a totalitarian system built on complete control over its citizens.

There are, however, people who long for a dreamed-of city of freedom, where everyone can live as a free human being surrounded by genuine love. Over time, Leo Kall himself begins to question his actions and his role as a loyal servant of the system.

Karin Boye's "Kallocain" was first published in 1940. Boye wrote the novel while observing the rise of Nazism in Germany with alarm and after visiting the Soviet Union in the 1930s.
