Description

"Kometen kommer", czyli "Comet over Moominvalley" in the original Swedish!

Kometen kommer (Comet over Moominvalley) is the second book in the main Moomin series by Finnish author Tove Jansson.

When reading this book, you can feel that it was written in the shadow of war. By writing, the artist wanted to relieve herself of the burden of the fighting period. The manuscript was written in the summer of 1945 (atomic bombs were dropped in Japan in August), and in the spring of the following year it was accepted by the publishing house. The illustrations were created in May 1946. As in the previous book, the author made ink drawings.

Disaster as a theme is a hallmark of the Moomin world. The one from the Comet... takes on a truly biblical character. We have a dry sea, a falling star (comet) from the sky, the threat of destruction, "grief and fear." The imminent end is heralded by the "prophet" Muskrat, who reads Oswald Spengler's famous book "The Twilight of the West". He is not indifferent to the power of a heavenly body, but he is not indifferent to undertaking any task. It only informs about the path to knowledge. Similarly, professors from the Lonely Mountains Observatory. Tove criticizes isolating intellectualism and opposes it to action in practice.

In Comet... you can also find the author's feminist views, expressed through the mouth of Miss Migotka - pragmatism and sound judgment of the situation. The Comet... was not an immediate success, especially as far as Sweden was concerned. It received some positive reviews in Finland, but not all critics understood the spirit and message of the book. It was considered an "adventure" book for children and even called "wonderful", which irritated the author who intended the book for a more mature reader.

Children's Books?

With Det osynliga barnet (Tales from Moominvalley), the discussion about Tove Jansson as a children's author gained momentum. Critics unanimously debated the appropriate age of her audience.

In 1963, Stockholms Tidningen awarded Jansson the Finland-Swedish cultural prize for her short story collection.

Per Olov Sundman wrote that Tove’s stories “are not merely fairy tales for children.” With “all their inventiveness, poetic softness, whimsical and sometimes macabre accents,” they are also a read for older audiences. He described Tales from Moominvalley as “a collection of stimulating stories for adults.”

Perfect gift!

Could there be a better gift for a Moomin fan than the entire collection of adventures featuring the fantastic creatures of Moominvalley?

Tove Jansson, a Finnish writer, painter, illustrator, and comic artist.

She made her debut at the age of 14, and a year later, her comic The Story of the Lovelorn Larvae, Kropelli and Fabian was published. Always eccentric, she changed schools, dropped out of university, and knew she wanted to be a painter. The Moomin saga began with the creation of Sniff in 1940. From then on, Jansson wrote several children's books, novels for adults, and painted hundreds of artworks. She celebrated her successes by buying herself hats.

She claimed that she identified most with Snufkin, as he enjoyed being alone with himself.
