The original series about Pippi's adventures consists of three books: "Pippi Långstrump" ("Pippi Longstocking"), "Pippi Långstrump går ombord" ("Pippi Goes on Board") and "Pippi Långstrump i Söderhavet" ("Pippi in the South Seas"). They are available in the beautiful Astrid Lindgrens samlingsbibliotek collector's edition, with hardcover bindings and four-colour illustrations by Ingrid Vang Nyman.

Pippi's adventures were adapted for the screen by Olle Hellbom between 1969 and 1973, with Inger Nilsson in the title role. An animated adaptation of the books was also produced by Nelvana in 1997.

Interesting facts about Pippi!

The Polish translation of the book omitted two passages: a scene in which Pippi gives her teacher a gold watch and a passage in which she makes fun of school education. A scene in which Pippi tastes a piece of fly agaric mushroom was also changed. In the Swedish original, Pippi tries the mushroom and says it is edible, while in the Polish translation she spits it out and declares that it cannot be eaten.

The book was originally written for younger children. The language is relatively accessible, although some slightly archaic expressions and specific vocabulary may appear. It is a good choice both for children and for adults who are already learning Swedish.

The book is published by Rabén & Sjögren, the publishing house where Astrid Lindgren worked for almost 25 years.

Who is Pippi?

In April 1944, Astrid Lindgren sent the first version of the Pippi Långstrump manuscript to the publisher Bonniers. The manuscript was accompanied by a letter in which she described Pippi as a small Übermensch in the form of a child, placed in an entirely ordinary environment.

Thanks to her extraordinary strength and circumstances, Pippi is completely independent of adults, lives exactly as she pleases and always has the final word when confronting grown-ups.

The manuscript was rejected. A year later, Rabén & Sjögren agreed to publish the book after changes were made to the text.

A revolution in children's literature

At the time Pippi was about to make her debut, prevailing educational ideals still reflected 19th-century patterns in which children were expected to be disciplined and civilised, while adults were treated as the ultimate source of truth and authority. Against this background, Pippi's rebellion was particularly striking.

The adults and the rigid order they represent become the main targets of her defiance. By knocking grown-ups off their pedestal, Lindgren's heroine exposes and challenges the limitations of the world they have created, becoming a champion of the child's own space and perspective.

Independence above all

It is also significant that Pippi is a girl who freely mocks traditional expectations about the roles and status of women and men. Traits historically considered desirable in young girls included obedience, shyness, fearfulness and passivity, all closely associated with the domestic role assigned to women in a patriarchal social order.

In Lindgren's trilogy, Pippi's courage, independence and carefree attitude are contrasted with Annika's passivity, obedience and timidity. The constant contrast between these two models of girlhood creates a deliberately exaggerated effect that emphasises the title character's rebellion against conventional expectations.
